Reliable accessibility is a central part of the ITS Netherlands programme. This not only encompasses predicting travelling times but also realising efficient, safe, comfortable and environmentally-friendly transport systems by developing instruments for traffic management, travel information, eSafety and transactions.
Traffic Guidance
Optimising the capacity of the network through the co-operation of all parties concerned. The challenge is to manage the traffic and transport network as a whole, as a single traffic system. By applying ITS the traffic system can be used more efficient, safer and more sustainable.
Travel Information
Making optimal use of the infrastructure is a prerequisite, but is insufficient in tackling the growing mobility problems. The next level is to influence the demand by distributing up-to-the-minute traffic and travel information. The effects of events, weather, work in progress and accidents should not just be better managed by ITS, but should also be provided as information to users.
eSafety
Each year some 36,000 traffic deaths occur in Europe. The European objective is to reduce this number by 50% in the year 2010. The implementation of ITS can help to substantially reduce the number of traffic deaths. Examples of eSafett measures are eCall, Alco Lock and different active and passive safety systems.
eTransactions
eTransactions means payment systems in traffic and transport such as solutions for tolling, parking and road pricing. For several years now mobility pricing has been viewed as an instrument through which to achieve various objectives: more honest distribution of the costs of mobility, better accessibility, improving the quality of the environment, and increasing traffic safety.
